About the Topic
The F-22 Raptor combines advancements in aerodynamics, propulsion, and stealth to achieve its uncontested role as the world's leading Air Dominance Fighter. From a practical perspective, the Raptor can only fill this role if it incorporates Lean principles to be both producible and affordable. Contributing to its affordability, a combination of increasing the maturity of incoming hardware and applying Lean manufacturing concepts in the factory has significantly reduced production cycle times for the Boeing-built wings and aft fuselages. While these efforts dramatically reduced Takt (target step) times at several stations, waiting for cure of the fay surface sealant used to close out the wings' integral fuel tanks remained a stumbling block to attaining full production rate in a Lean factory footprint – an achievement requiring a reduction in station Takt time from 14 to 7 days. This presentation chronicles the method by which a faster curing sealant was implemented to meet this challenge. Thoughtful selection of material specification requirements ensure that this solution will remain robust over the wide range of factory conditions expected.
About the Speaker
David Jensen started his career with two years of R&D experience focusing on “hydraulic fracturing” of oil wells at Halliburton Services. Desiring to return to the University of Washington region where he had earned his Chemical Engineering Degree, he accepted a position at Boeing in 1984 researching stealth related materials and processes. After developing various materials for application on the F-22 Raptor, he diversified to work on finishes, fuel tank sealing, and structural retrofit programs. Mr. Jensen, currently an Associate Technical Fellow, is now working radome technologies for unspecified programs at Boeing. David and his wife of 27 years, Beth, are the proud, albeit financially challenged, parents of three young adults. Jenni just graduated from CWU in Organismal Biology (any jobs out there?). Jaci is studying at David’s Alma Mater and her twin brother, James, is juggling wrestling and studies at Highline Community College. If life ever slows down, David would like to add photography and Kart racing to his current interests of racquetball and mountain biking.
Seattle Chapter Sponsorship for 2008
The SAMPE Seattle Chapter is fortunate to have a strong backing from our sponsors. Sponsors provide both a financial resource as well as diversity to our organization. We ask our current sponsors to continue supporting our chapter activities during 2008. We also invite anyone interested in sponsorship of the Seattle Chapter to consider the benefits:
Interested parties should click here for Sponsorship Information or visit the Seattle Chapter Website!
-Your company advertisement will appear in the ten issues of the Seattle Chapter newsletter.
Our newsletter is distributed in a timely manner to all chapter members and sponsors with copies to the International
Business Office and other SAMPE chapters throughout the country.
-Sponsors may choose to have a tabletop display at the annual Puget Sound Materials Expo (PSME)
to be held February 26, 2008 at the Museum of Flight in Seattle. In 2007 there were 20 exhibitors and over 170 visitors.
-Your company will be listed as a sponsor on the chapter web page, www.seattlesampe.org.
If your company has a web page, we will also provide a link.

MATHCOUNTS Contests - Helpers Needed
MATHCOUNTS is a nationwide math contest for middle school students. Volunteers are needed to be contest proctors and graders for local events in February and March. Dates and locations are: February 2nd, Redmond, WA; February 9th, Univ. of Washington and Auburn,WA; and March 15th, Redmond, WA. If you are interested in volunteering please contact Pam Maloney or Dan Cory. For more information about MATHCOUNTS, visit the website www.mathcounts.org
Washington State Future City Competition - Mentors Needed

The IEEE Seattle Section sponsors the Washington State Future City Competition.
Seventh and eighth graders compete by engineering a city of the future using simulation software.
A record number of teams have signed up for this years competition and we have a shortage of mentors.
Please let your members know that we are looking for volunteer mentors for the program.
Additional information on the program and contact information for becoming a mentor can be found at:

Awards Committee - Volunteers Needed
Each year we can submit applications for awards presented by SAMPE or the Puget Sound Engineering Council Engineering Council. See the PSEC site for more details at http://www.pseconline.org/Events/AwardsBanquet/ . Please send an email to Arlene Brown at arlene8693@yahoo.com with "SAMPE Awards" in the title if you are interested in joining, or leading, an Awards Committee.
Technicians Can Earn Certificates in Composites at Edmonds CC
Edmonds Community College will offer a Work Ready Certificate in Materials Science, starting winter quarter, 2007. In this program, students learn basic material properties, advantages of using composites, and manufacturing processes. The courses will also emphasize hands-on learning.
"We're combining emerging technology with innovative learning processes to create a short term certificate program. They will be flexible in their delivery," said Mel Cossette, Director of Materials Science at Edmonds Community College.
The program is the result of close cooperation between the Boeing Company and Edmonds Community College. The focus of the program is the production of aerospace composites that can be used for a variety of applications, including the 787. Classes will be held in the late afternoon and early evening, Monday through Thursday.
"Our classes are scheduled so that incumbent workers can take advantage of this training," said David Wood, Instructor at Edmonds Community College.
Registration is underway for the classes which will start in January, 2007. To learn more about the programs visit: Materials Science Work Ready Certificate
