About the Topic
The history of composite structures since 1940 is reviewed in terms of structural performance. Examples are shown from the construction and aerospace industries, with special attention to wind energy and kiteboarding. Based on current trends, projections are made for future development of composites in aerospace and other industries. The future for nano composites, space elevators, electric airplanes, and other exciting new developments made possible by composite materials is discussed.
About the Speaker
As a member of Boeing’s New Airplane Product Development team Billy Roeseler has been creating more airplane for less cost and weight using innovative composite structures. Projects include the Sonic Cruiser, the 787 Dreamliner, 767 (composites focal), V-22 Osprey, JVX, the A6 composite wing, low-cost bonded sandwich structures, prototype development, new concept studies and weight reduction. At UTC, Advanced Systems Division, he was Section Head for Structural Analysis. Billy was Keynote Speaker for the International Conference on Composite Materials (ICCM-16) in Kyoto, Japan which led to participation in a design course on composites, hosted by Stanford University.
Outside of aerospace Billy is considered a global expert in Wind Energy, has brought higher standards to race boats from Americas Cup boats to unlimited hydroplanes, and holds US patents on hydrofoils, high performance composites, and the Kiteski. He is a member of the Canyon Space Team, a collaboration of aerospace professionals and schools which is developing and performing tests on rocket plane concepts.

IEEE/Nat'l Engineering Week Future City Competition

The National Engineers Week Future City Competition is a contest for 7th and 8th grade students hosted locally by the Seattle Section Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
In it, middle school classes design a future city using SimCity 3000 software, build a model of the city, write an essay, and make a verbal presentation. The program is designed to foster an interest in math, science, team building and engineering through hands-on, real-world applications. The contest is open to all public, private, home, and parochial schools.
Interested schools, teachers, or parents should check out a pdf flyer of the event Here or click on the contest overview Here.
The contest is also looking for people interested in the competition to help out in the areas of school recruitment, engineering mentors, financial sponsorship, and judges. Please contact Steve Allen (sallen@ieee.org) or Karen Pavletich (kpavle@ieee.org) for more details.

Technicians Can Earn Certificates in Composites at Edmonds CC
Edmonds Community College will offer a Work Ready Certificate in Materials Science, starting winter quarter, 2007. In this program, students learn basic material properties, advantages of using composites, and manufacturing processes. The courses will also emphasize hands-on learning.
"We're combining emerging technology with innovative learning processes to create a short term certificate program. They will be flexible in their delivery," said Mel Cossette, Director of Materials Science at Edmonds Community College.
The program is the result of close cooperation between the Boeing Company and Edmonds Community College. The focus of the program is the production of aerospace composites that can be used for a variety of applications, including the 787. Classes will be held in the late afternoon and early evening, Monday through Thursday.
"Our classes are scheduled so that incumbent workers can take advantage of this training," said David Wood, Instructor at Edmonds Community College.
Registration is underway for the classes which will start in January, 2007. To learn more about the programs visit: Materials Science Work Ready Certificate
