About the Topic
Glass Art, by virtue of its beauty and mystery, has tremendous potential to capture our interest to learn about science. “Color in Glass Arts” is a good example. Glass technology involves the complex relationship between chemical compositions, unique structures, physical and chemical properties, and processing; thus “glass” can become a medium that can bridge art and science. In fact, artists reach into science and technology in order to develop their ability to create works fulfilling their artistic vision. In this talk, I am attempting to explain how the color is generated in glass arts, and how the artists control colors from their experience.
About the Speaker
Fumio S. Ohuchi is a Professor of Materials Science and Engineering and Adjunct Professor of Physics at the University of Washington. After receiving his PhD in MSE from the University of Florida in 1981, Dr. Ohuchi worked in DuPont (Wilmington, DE) for 10 years before joining UW in 1992. His research interest is Energy Materials and Technology, where controlling intrinsic properties of the materials to improve their functionalities for thermoelectric, magneto-caloric, electronic, spintronic, photovoltaic and phase-change applications is the main theme. Experimentally, a new synthesis technique called “Combinatorial Materials Exploration (CME)” has been developed to screen materials’ compositions and processing conditions that yield desired properties. Beside research and teaching activities, Dr. Ohuchi has numerous hobbies, ranging from playing harpsichord, recording live music, shooting video-performance and to producing DVD movies, and more recently, he is crazy about his brand new MINI-Cooper S Turbo
Enhance Your Resume! SAMPE Activities Open for Volunteers
The Seattle SAMPE Chapter is calling for volunteers for SAMPE activities. This is a great opportunity to get involved with SAMPE and enhance your resume!
-Developing management support for SAMPE events
-Collecting success stories
-Coordinating meeting announcement distribution within your company
-Arranging SAMPE participation in internal corporate events e.g. fairs, new hire events
-Working together with your company's SAMPE International representative (if applicable)
Please contact Arlene Brown if you would like to be involved with any of these activities, or our existing committees such as Membership, Finance, Programs, or Newsletter. Email Arlene at arlene8693@yahoo.com (please reference SAMPE in email title) or call 206-431-8693 (Saturday afternoons are best.)
Historian Committee Chairman and Committee Members
The Historian Committee's role is to capture current activities, photographs, and lessons learned. The Committee will also begin converting key items from past Historian records into digital format.Seattle SAMPE Chapter Liaison to your Company
These liaison positions were created to increase Chapter visibility, membership, meeting attendance, and conference attendance. Possible strategies include:-Developing management support for SAMPE events

Washington State Future City Competition - Mentors Needed

The IEEE Seattle Section sponsors the Washington State Future City Competition.
Seventh and eighth graders compete by engineering a city of the future using simulation software.
A record number of teams have signed up for this years competition and we have a shortage of mentors.
Please let your members know that we are looking for volunteer mentors for the program.
Additional information on the program and contact information for becoming a mentor can be found at:

Awards Committee - Volunteers Needed
Each year we can submit applications for awards presented by SAMPE or the Puget Sound Engineering Council Engineering Council. See the PSEC site for more details at http://www.pseconline.org/Events/AwardsBanquet/ . Please send an email to Arlene Brown at arlene8693@yahoo.com with "SAMPE Awards" in the title if you are interested in joining, or leading, an Awards Committee.
Technicians Can Earn Certificates in Composites at Edmonds CC
Edmonds Community College will offer a Work Ready Certificate in Materials Science, starting winter quarter, 2007. In this program, students learn basic material properties, advantages of using composites, and manufacturing processes. The courses will also emphasize hands-on learning.
"We're combining emerging technology with innovative learning processes to create a short term certificate program. They will be flexible in their delivery," said Mel Cossette, Director of Materials Science at Edmonds Community College.
The program is the result of close cooperation between the Boeing Company and Edmonds Community College. The focus of the program is the production of aerospace composites that can be used for a variety of applications, including the 787. Classes will be held in the late afternoon and early evening, Monday through Thursday.
"Our classes are scheduled so that incumbent workers can take advantage of this training," said David Wood, Instructor at Edmonds Community College.
Registration is underway for the classes which will start in January, 2007. To learn more about the programs visit: Materials Science Work Ready Certificate
