About the Topic
Commercial Aircraft Applications and Processes for Advanced Composites
Commercial aircraft has undergone revolutionary changes in design, configuration and materials. The increased use of advanced composites on the 787 provide enhanced performance to our airline customers as well as improved comfort to the flying public. With use of composites in large aircraft structure, new challenges arise ranging from process controls of raw materials to testing and fabrication of structural components to service damage assessments. As we analyze the value stream, it is imperative to understand various process parameters and their relationship to product life cycle including design, build, test and qualification.

Technicians Can Earn Certificates in Composites at Edmonds CC
Edmonds Community College will offer a Work Ready Certificate in Materials Science, starting winter quarter, 2007. In this program, students learn basic material properties, advantages of using composites, and manufacturing processes. The courses will also emphasize hands-on learning.
"We're combining emerging technology with innovative learning processes to create a short term certificate program. They will be flexible in their delivery," said Mel Cossette, Director of Materials Science at Edmonds Community College.
The program is the result of close cooperation between the Boeing Company and Edmonds Community College. The focus of the program is the production of aerospace composites that can be used for a variety of applications, including the 787. Classes will be held in the late afternoon and early evening, Monday through Thursday.
"Our classes are scheduled so that incumbent workers can take advantage of this training," said David Wood, Instructor at Edmonds Community College.
Registration is underway for the classes which will start in January, 2007. To learn more about the programs visit: Materials Science Work Ready Certificate
