About the Topic
X-Cor and K-Cor are foam based lightweight structural cores reinforced with rods oriented in a truss pattern. They were developed to give foam core the structural capabilities of honeycomb core without the associated service related issues. They offer the design community a wide range of options regarding density, localized load carrying capability and weight savings. Tim Andrews will discuss the attributes of the products as well as the efforts to automate the production process used in manufacturing K-Cor and X-Cor.
About the Speaker
Tim Andrews of Albany Engineered Composites is Program Manager for K-Cor and X-Cor products, which are produced in Albany’s Mansfield, Massachusetts facility. Tim has over 15 years experience in the composites industry including operations, manufacturing engineering, process development and program management. Tim has hands-on composites experience having worked with Radant Technologies, Inc. and as a Development Engineer with Aztex, Inc., original developers of the X-Cor and K-Cor products.
2007 PSME Feedback
The 2007 Puget Sound Materials Expo at the Seattle Museum of Flight on 27 February was well received with more than 180 attendees and 20 exhibitors. The chapter has at least 30 sponsors this year. The website and newsletters will be updated to reflect the new sponsor advertisements. Thanks to all our sponsors and to the exhibitors at PSME.

Technicians Can Earn Certificates in Composites at Edmonds CC
Edmonds Community College will offer a Work Ready Certificate in Materials Science, starting winter quarter, 2007. In this program, students learn basic material properties, advantages of using composites, and manufacturing processes. The courses will also emphasize hands-on learning.
"We're combining emerging technology with innovative learning processes to create a short term certificate program. They will be flexible in their delivery," said Mel Cossette, Director of Materials Science at Edmonds Community College.
The program is the result of close cooperation between the Boeing Company and Edmonds Community College. The focus of the program is the production of aerospace composites that can be used for a variety of applications, including the 787. Classes will be held in the late afternoon and early evening, Monday through Thursday.
"Our classes are scheduled so that incumbent workers can take advantage of this training," said David Wood, Instructor at Edmonds Community College.
Registration is underway for the classes which will start in January, 2007. To learn more about the programs visit: Materials Science Work Ready Certificate
